Wellow Maypole
For a truly unique experience, visit the village of Wellow in the district of Newark and Sherwood. At the centre of the village green stands its 60 foot high Maypole, one of only three permanent maypoles in the country.
Maypole dancing is a form of folk dancing when dancers dance in a circle each holding a coloured ribbon. As they dance, the ribbons are intertwined and plaited either on to the pole or into a web around the pole.
The Wellow Maypole can be traced as far back as 1856. The current maypole was purchased in 1977 with the help of a heritage grant. It is a three section tubular steel pole decorated with three cross pieces with metal crown shapes at each end. Surmounting the pole is a weathervane made by a local engineer.
Every spring bank holiday you can share in the traditional May Day celebrations such as the Crowning of the May Queen. The New Queen is crowned by the retiring Queen and takes her place on the May Throne to watch the Maypole Dancing.
