GARDEN WASTE COLLECTIONS
Published:Wednesday 21 July 2010Residents of Newark and Sherwood who would like to take part in a new garden and plant waste collection are being asked to contact the council to register their interest. The survey area has been expanded and is being conducted across the district to gauge interest in a scheme which will provide subscribers with a fortnightly bin collection for grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, leaves, small branches and twigs, plants and weeds with soil shaken off and cut flowers. Those who express their interest will be entered into a prize draw to win £100 of garden centre vouchers. The council is initially asking for expressions of interest in the scheme which will cost subscribers £26 a year, although people will be able to pay for extra bins if they produce a lot of organic waste. Anyone across the district can indicate if this is something they would be interested in, but the council is primarily looking for survey responses in the western part of the district. In order to make the scheme viable, there would need to be a considerable response from people. If you want this service to become a reality then this is your opportunity to tell us so. Organic garden waste is the largest and easiest waste group currently not recycled which can be targeted to increase levels. Currently the council recycles around 26% of all the waste it collects but is aiming for 30%. Compostable organic garden waste makes up around 21% of the contents of a typical rubbish bin. Currently in Newark and Sherwood, this goes to landfill. All garden waste collected would be composted. If you want the scheme in your area, please fill out one of the survey forms being distributed around the area, fill in the form on-line or call 01636 655600. | ||
